The Lord is good,
a stronghold on a day of trouble;
he protects those who take refuge in him.
-Nahum 1:7
NOVEMBER 19 - PROMISE #323
I will be your safe place in difficult times.
Earlier this year I found a website that has a Bible verse (aka - Daily Promise) each day. I have really enjoyed checking in on this site for daily promises so I thought I would reflect on today’s Bible verse. This promise from Nahum 1:7 is that God will be our safe place in difficult times.
I see daily prayer as asking God to give us refuge whatever that may mean for the day. Maybe we need physical protection from people who are not working for our best interests. Maybe it is God sending a ‘wake up’ to remind us to slow down or pay attention. Maybe it is God holding us through a hard day, or walking with us during a good day. God is there for the good too. Taking refuge doesn't have to just mean getting away from trouble or discontent. It can mean continually living in the awareness of God and all of God’s care.
God being our safe place even when we are moving about our day can sometimes be unnoticed. We may not be able to see every time that God is working as a safe place. We won’t see all of the times that God protects us, although with the help of cameras everywhere we are seeing more and more moments of care. One example of this is a dash cam video my brother sent me while he was driving in Houston. He was heading through a green light. The light had been green for some time and just as he entered the intersection a car ran the red light and flew in front of him, missing him by about a foot. What I also noticed in the video is that he delayed for just a moment before moving forward with the cars when the light did turn green. I asked him about this and he said a bird had flown oddly close to his truck and distracted him for a second. I believe this is an example of God being a safe place. An answer to my brother’s daily prayers of protection and care.
I am continuing to work to be more aware and present, giving God the glory in everything, even in the small blessings. Tiny moments that whisper, “I am with you.” Everyday blessings are reminders of God’s ongoing faithfulness. How has God been a safe place for you? How does it feel to look back at times when God has held and protected you?
