Next Sunday, we are going to hear from Britt Swanson, Executive Director of Lutheran Lakeside Camp, about the important ministry of camp. She’ll say a great deal about the activities, programs, facilities, and much more. I hope you can be there to hear about it!

I want to say only one thing about why I consider camp to be an important part of the ministry of the whole church: camp is for kids.

There are, of course, lots of places in the church where kids are welcomed and included. There’s worship and Sunday School. There are events for kids, like Vacation Bible School and lock-ins. Camp feels different because it is a whole week at a whole facility designed FOR kids. Camp exists so that kids can grow closer to God, connect with one another, gain confidence, try new things. Kids lead worship. Kids choose how to spend their cabin time. Kids are the focal point of planning and the recipients of staff efforts. Kids serve as they help with kitchen duty or clean the shower house. Camp is for kids.

In the gospels, Jesus often makes time for kids. “Let the children come,” he instructs, when his disciples think that kids aren’t important enough to take up his time. “Have faith like a child,” he admonishes, when his disciples miss the point. Childlike wonder and trust and curiosity are in the heart of faith. Jesus knows this; camp reminds us.

At camp, kids get to ask questions. They get to hear the story of Jesus. They get to step out of their comfort zones and find that the Holy Spirit is with them there, too. Camp is for kids, so that their childlike faith may grow strong. Camp is for kids, so that they may know that the church makes spaces for them, not just for adults. Camp is for kids, so they may hear and trust that the love of Jesus isn’t found just in one place, but wherever people gather in his name.

Camp is for kids, and I’m so glad.

During her visit, Britt will share about Lutheran Lakeside Camp’s special campaign, For Every Season. Please take a look at the goals and consider how you may be called to support their ongoing work.
